Can a version 6 node sync with a version 5.8 node? Or do I have to schedule downtime to upgrade to 6.0 ?

The procedure will not require the downtime at all. You just need to install 6.0 on top of 5.8 (you can install it on node2 only after the synchronization process will be finished).

Just wanted to let you know did the upgrade this morning and thus far everything is fine. Was actually surprised by how fast the HA targets synced.

Did my upgrade now. All good so far.
btw: Is it possible to enable ALUA without recreating the target (or switching parter, to the same partner)
It would be GREAT to be able to suspend one or multiple target(s), do some settings (ALUA, sync channels etc) and then just do a quick-sync to be up and running again. Now we have to do a full sync, right?

In this version yes.
Removing a partner, then adding the partner with ALUA enabled -> requires full sync.
