Google Undersea Fibre Optic Cabling is Online

Google announced that its FASTER Cable system, an undersea fibre optic cable running from the US to Japan, is now online. This will give them up to 10 terabytes per second (about 1/6 of the cable’s total bandwidth). This is claimed to be the highest-capacity undersea cable ever built.

One of the main Google’s motivations for this cable is to prepare for its launch of the new Google Cloud Platform in East Asia region this year. This cable coming online will bring faster transfers and lower latency for customers of Google Cloud Platform. Besides, it will also bring valuable redundancy to the seismically sensitive East Asia region.

This cable is the fourth undersea cable Google has run:  the first one was the 7.68Tb trans-Pacific Unity cable, which came online in 2010.
