Introduction

Welcome back, everyone! If you’ve been following this series, you know we’re talking all about VM migrations using StarWind V2V Converter. In the first article , we covered how to convert VMs to and from Oracle VirtualBox. Today, we’re diving into converting VMs to oVirt, an open-source virtualization platform that’s gaining traction in enterprise environments.

Remember, you can download StarWind V2V Converter here if you want to try these conversions yourself.

Like with any conversion, oVirt requires its specific VM format, and StarWind V2V Converter is the perfect tool to handle this task. Let’s get started!

VM conversion to oVirt

Before we get into the details, you can find the full process of converting VMs to oVirt by following this link:

Converting VMs to oVirt is also similar to what we did with Oracle VirtualBox VM, however, the final steps have additional settings that I would like to show. So, let’s have a look at it.

First, open StarWind V2V Converter and select the source of the conversion. In my case, it is Microsoft Hyper-V Server:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, програмне забезпечення, число Автоматично згенерований опис

Enter the IP address or the hostname of the source server and specify credentials. Or use Windows authentication if you are running V2V Converter on the source server:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, монітор, програмне забезпечення Автоматично згенерований опис

Now select the VM that you would like to convert:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, монітор, програмне забезпечення Автоматично згенерований опис

IMPORTANT NOTE: The VM should be powered off before starting the conversion.

Now we need to choose oVirt as the target virtualization platform:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, програмне забезпечення, монітор Автоматично згенерований опис

Specify the URL of the oVirt Engine and the credentials of the oVirt Engine admin account:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, монітор, програмне забезпечення Автоматично згенерований опис

Now we need to configure the new VM that is going to be created in the destination oVirt environment:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, монітор, число Автоматично згенерований опис

Once again, we’ll need to wait until the process is completed to start using our converted VM in oVirt:

Зображення, що містить текст, знімок екрана, монітор, програмне забезпечення Автоматично згенерований опис

Now your VM is good to go in the oVirt environment.

Conclusion

There you have it – another smooth and efficient VM migration thanks to StarWind V2V Converter. Stay tuned for our next article, where we’ll explore conversions to and from Proxmox.
